UK: FOREIGN SECRETARY SIR DOUGLAS HURD RESIGNS

Is a Keynote by Next Week Possible? Find Out How.

English/Nat

The British Foreign Secretary Douglas Hurd has announced he is to retire.

The announcement follows the day after Prime Minister John Major resigned as leader of the Conservative party, but Mr. Hurd said his decision was made earlier this year and not affected by the Prime Minister’s decision.

SOUNDBITE:

“Good morning, thank you very much for gathering, I’m making public today something which the prime minister and I have known for a long time now, namely that I decided some time ago that this summer was the right time for me to retire as foreign secretary. So after the prime minister is reelected, and when he makes changes in his government, I will then be standing down standing as foreign secretary.”

“I’m a strong supporter and admirer of the prime minister. I can’t recall anyone that I’ve worked with in government with whom my dealings and friendship have been closer or more effective. I look forward to supporting him in the leadership campaign and after that supporting him as an active back bencher in the house of commons.”

“Well he set it out in the garden of number ten yesterday. He’s been doing his best with the support of the whole cabinet to carry through a series of conservative polices. Ten days ago the cabinet met and reaffirmed those policies including those on Europe. And as he said yesterday there has been a minority of the party, which , to put it mildly, have made life difficult. So I strongly support what the prime minister has done in putting that to the test, putting that to the touch in this coming month. I strongly support that. what people will be asked to do is to support not just the prime minister but the policies which he set out and which the whole cabinet approves of and are putting into effect.”

“These are policies that which are made collectively. Policies have been made collectively – they’ve been set out by the Prime Minister in a number of speeches. They were recently reaffirmed by the whole cabinet and those are the policies which will be continued. I think that is entirely clear what the Prime Minister was saying in the garden – over the wall yesterday – the time has come for everybody to show support for the Prime Minister in carrying out the policies in which the Prime Minister and the government believe.”
