This presentation explores the question, “Where’s home in the public speaking course?” Or, phrased another way, “What’s fundamental about what communication educators teach in the public speaking course?” In the process of teaching a myriad of concepts, principles, skills and frameworks for informative and persuasive speaking in the typical public speaking course, this presentation will share a perspective for integrating public speaking content around a common, unifying theme. Issues to be discussed include: Why is it important to identify our common home, not only when teaching pubic speaking to our students, but also in identifying an underlying common story to the communication discipline? What are the challenges and obstacles that keep us and our students from identifying our home in the public speaking course as well as in the communication discipline? How do we find out way home? And finally, what are ways of identifying a central, unifying “home” when teaching public speaking? Dr. Beebe will explore these questions and then invite listeners to join the conversation sharing additional perspectives and points of view.
This presentation took place and was recorded in 4/20/11.
