Successful Artists plan for after the release. Know what comes next? An LW Music Business Consultant, Speaker & Author Blog Video.
After a really cool tour through the Yuengling Factory in Pottsville, Pennsylvania this past weekend, I thought about the comparisons to beer being produced like music and then the whole element of bottling, distribution, marketing and all the other elements that make artists succeed in the new music business of today. Kind of like an artists guide to beer and music business comparisons.
The attention to detail has to go well beyond just the release. In the same way, the Yuengling factory has its bottling area and casing areas as well as shipping bays. Successful artists need to look after the release to how an album, EP or even single will be distributed, promoted and marketed to the public. After a release, just taking the stance of saying its done and announcing it on Facebook, Twitter and your website is not a release. Having a release is not a release. These are parts of a release, but it takes a lot more.
Know what comes next before you get to the release. Set up the marketing plan, the music business plan and even f the budget is tight, make sure you are thinking down the line to what comes next after the album is out there. Of course if you have a quarter million to put in to pushing a release, it is a different story, but I am guessing most of you do not have that on hand.
The point is, take a wider view of what has to be done. Look at setting up a music business plan to organize not just the recording but also the release as well. Think of your music like a product that needs to be shared. If a beer company just spent all its money making beer and did not take in to account, bottling, shipping, distribution, marketing and sales, who would ever hear of it. The same goes for your band.
