Our lives are constantly filled with challenges and difficulties (including being a student in an online environment). We’ve heard of testing anxiety, math anxiety, technology anxiety, writing anxiety, and the list goes on. For many years, psychologists have been instructing us to find ways to reduce or eliminate stress. Thus, when students are placed in stressful situations they have been taught to retreat or move to protection mode. However, recent research has been showing us that we should, in reality, be embracing stressful situations. The acute stress (not the chronic stress) actually provides health benefits if we face the stress with a paradigm shift. This presentation will discuss the paradigm shift towards understanding stress, add a LDS-gospel lens to empirical research, and discuss methods and strategies that can be used by an online instructor to encourage and support students in embracing a stressful environment.
