Mary was invited to be on a prestigious panel at a high profile conference.
Initially, she attempted to turn down the opportunity, but her manager forced her to go to represent the company.
Mary became a client of mine, and unfortunately, I see many women like Mary every month.
Why do competent, smart, and capable women turn down career boosting opportunities like that? What is their solution?
Males have similar issues with the spotlight. However, their reasons are entirely different than female clients which I will address in a later article.
When I asked Mary about her reluctance to be on the panel, she gave me one specific reason. She said, “There are rockstars on the panel who are all men; they are far more knowledgeable on the topic than I. They only invited me because I am a woman.”
I have heard countless variations of this response before.
This type of reaction assumes that knowledge and experience are the only factors for choosing a panelist or speaker and that any other reason for choosing them is invalid.
I couldn't disagree more.
From my personal experience, I've noticed that conference organizers have two top priority goals which are: 1) To increase conference attendance and 2) To increase the number of attendees satisfaction of the event. They accomplish that by hosting good speakers.
What then, makes “a good speaker” in the eyes of a conference organizer?
You guessed it: Good speakers who bring people to the conference and are keep capable of keeping those people happy!
Unfortunately (or fortunately) in our culture, knowledge and experience do not attract others, and they rarely make people happy. Therefore they cannot be used a sole criterion for selecting conference speakers.
Other criterion for good conference speakers are:
1. Celebrity Status: They are a known celebrity within or outside of their environment.
2. Controversial Stand: They have a polarizing and emotionally charged position.
3. Unique Point-of-View: They have a unique perspective on the topic.
4. Good Public Speakers: They know how to communicate their ideas well.
5. Unique Personal Story: They have a compelling personal story that engages the audience.
6. Relevant Topic: They speak about industry problems and provide unique solutions.
7. Big Following: They have a big following in social media or within their community.
8. Reputation: They have a great reputation within their community.
9. Strong Company Brand: They work for a big brand.
10. Diversity: They bring about the inclusion of minorities.
Notice, that knowledge and experience is just one criteria out of the eleven that I've mentioned in this article. I personally know a lot of conference organizers; they would sacrifice knowledge and experience any day, for a speaker with any other quality on the list.
The fortunate part about being “a woman” is that you are given three of these criteria of the batt. As women, you already come with a unique point of view, you have a unique personal story and you have diversity. However, this will not last for long because as time moves on, there will be more and more women speakers at conferences and you will lose your advantage as “a woman” if you do not use it.
Being a woman does not take away from any of the other criteria. You can be woman and you can be knowledgeable and an expert; you can be a celebrity and you can have a significant following and have the support of a big brand. These qualities will only make you more desirable as a leader in the spotlight.

You get evaluated by management and peers every time you speak in front of a group.
In order to win and to do well, you have to know the qualities they are looking for and the criteria of evaluation.
That's why when I facilitate executive retreats on communication skills, I start by having the executives write up characteristics of good presenters based on their own perception.
I used to think that each organization had their unique criteria based on their own culture. However, after working with hundreds of executive teams, I realised there were common criterion that surfaced all the time.
I analysed the results I got over the years. Below, I have summarized the top 8 results into a list of what composes a great presenter in any corporate setting.
( I will be doing more research in this area and will be posting results in future posts, so make sure you subscribe to our list to stay in the loop).
To be a memorable and believable presenter, you need to have confidence. The fortunate part is that confidence can be built and developed over time. I work on my confidence as a presenter on a daily basis, and I will keep working on it forever. Building confidence is like building muscle, you need to work on it with discipline in order for it to grow and develop.
Energy is contagious. You go to see animated speakers because they energize and inspire you. You don't want to rob your audience of your energy. You want to infect them and to spread your energy like wildfire.
If you are not an animated speaker, then that is just your conditioning and your self-image. Start by taking acting and improvisation classes and watch your expressional ability skyrocket in a natural “non-contrived” way.
No one wants to hear a rambling speaker. The moment you start rambling people will begin to tune you out.
Have clarity with it comes to your ideas, opinions, philosophy, and beliefs. Once you are clear and focused, start by communicating your ideas while continuing to modify and clarify them even more (use the same process standup comics use to polish and shine their content).
Remember that clarity comes from preparation.
Public speaking is a type of dance. Just like the Salsa and Tango, public speaking requires that you interact with your partner.
In the case of public speaking, your partner is the audience. Ask them questions, interact with them, and tease them; don't just stand in front of them.

I know what you are thinking. You can do everything on this list so far but you can't do this one. Let me guess – you are not funny!
I hear this all the time, and I know that you are funny even if I have never met you. Everyone is funny in their own way. You just need to bring it out. Take an improv class or a stand-up comedy class if you have to.
Content is king. And yes, it is still the king in this case.
To be memorable, you need to have strong content.
Immerse yourself in your industry and field, and learn more than anybody you know about it. Share your insights in your presentations. Teach your audience something they have not heard before.
We live in a materialistic society. Therefore, you will be judged initially by how you look and what you are wearing.
You can say that this is not fair or that this is not true, but survey after survey in my own classes show that that people put weight into this.
So dress the part at least for the first impression.
People are hungry to hear leaders speak. The moment you allow a slide deck control the flow of your presentation, you are not in the lead anymore.
Take control of your slides by leading your presentation and your audience. You should be able to deliver your presentation without any slides if you had to (regardless of the content). I recommend practicing your presentation without slides at least once.
Now you know how executives and audience members evaluate you as a speaker. The criterion is simple. it can be achieved by anyone who willing to put in some work.
