For a couple of decades now, Microsoft PowerPoint has been a staple tool in the hands of many professionals.
PowerPoint incorporates standard Office features and a familiar, user-friendly interface that allows you to create static and interactive presentations quickly.
However, PowerPoint is the not the only option for you out there.
There are some great PowerPoint alternatives out there that could perform as well as, if not better than Microsoft PowerPoint, and make your presentation enjoyable, interactive, and productive.
Regardless of your career or profession, you will, at some point, need to present your ideas to your audience in the form of graphic slides.
So if you are seeking to stray from the norm (and stand out), but you want something close to the feel of PowerPoint with some additional features and functions, I have carefully selected some great PowerPoint alternatives.
These programs can help you craft beautiful slides and create engaging visuals that will not only give meaning to your presentations but will grab the attention of your audience as well.
So whether you are trying to make your idea known to a group of people in a visual form, or you are seeking to create an interactive presentation with a captivating interface, here are some great PowerPoint alternatives that can get the job done for you without compromising the quality of your presentation.
These alternatives to PowerPoint, a couple of which I have tested myself, are budget friendly and do not cost much compared to Microsoft PowerPoint.
The first alternative to PowerPoint on my list is Google Slides. Google Slides is part of Google's office software known as Google Docx.
With this app, it was love at first sight for me. It's quickly become one of my go-to apps because of its intuitive collaboration feature. It also gives me offline access to create and edit my presentations and slideshows. To get started, all I had to do was install the Google Slides app straight from the Chrome web store and synchronize it with my Google Drive for easy accessibility and offline access. This made it very easy for me to create, edit, view and run presentations through Google Slides without any Internet connection.
The most amazing aspect of this feature was the way everything automatically synced as soon as I was connected to the Internet. Owing to its perfectly integrated online collaboration feature, I was also able to share and edit presentations concurrently with my team.
We were able to work together on the same version of slides, thereby making our job less cumbersome and enabling us to get the job done quickly. Based on my experience using Google Slides, no app among the current alternatives to PowerPoint comes close to the simplicity and functionality that Google slides offers in creating, editing, sharing, and most importantly, presenting your ideas to your audience.
PCWORLD reports that Google Slides, through the power of Google Drive and Google Chrome apps, makes collaborating on presentations with other Google Drive users fast and straightforward, allowing you to leave notes for them and download the final presentation file in a PowerPoint format.
SlideDog is a powerful presentation tool that can combine almost any media into one uniquely designed multimedia presentation. The app's user-friendly interface allows you to combine PowerPoint, PDF documents, Word or Excel documents, video clips, images and much more into one seamless presentation.
CNET, while reviewing this app, states that SlideDog is fully optimized for use on dual displays, meaning it has a separate screen for your playlist, your timers, and your notes. All these are kept away from the view of your audience, so they only see your slides while you're able to see everything else.
SlideDog has a live sharing feature which allows you to broadcast and share a live stream of your slides with a “buttery smooth” responsiveness and speed. Your audience can also contribute and participate in a poll, provide live feedback and chat with each other during your presentation on a web browser through your channel link.
Your audience can also contribute and participate in a poll, provide live feedback and chat with each other during your presentation on a web browser through your channel link.
With the right tools at your disposal, crafting great designs and presentations ought to be easy and straightforward. Its easy to get bogged down with costly and complicated applications that may put the design out of your reach.
With Canva's non-prohibitive price point and super friendly user interface, these issues have become a thing of the past.
Canva comes in handy as an easy-to-use and totally free app for design professionals as well as those not graphically inclined. TECHCRUNCH writes that Canva creates an avenue for people to overcome their phobia of design through its quick twenty-three second video guide that displays when you launch the app for the first time.
With state-of-the-art layout options, a well-integrated stock photo library, intuitive drag and drop design options, and an online collaboration feature, you can easily create eye-catching slides and presentations.
This compelling alternative to PowerPoint is being adopted by many as the mainstream app for most design-related tasks and slideshows.
I have been experimenting with Canva a lot lately, especially when I am collaborating with a client on building a graphically heavy presentation.
Just like Canva and a couple of other PowerPoint alternatives, Haiku Deck takes a radically straightforward approach to creating beautiful slides and presentations.
Used as a web-based tool or an iOs app, this program gives you the ability to create stunning slides from a wide range of free, high-quality background themes and pictures. You can add text over the images to create visually appealing informative slides.
Haiku Deck is a highly customizable template-based platform that allows you to import pictures from your device's local storage, cloud storage, and social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, etc., to give your presentation a more attractive and personalized look.
Haiku Deck can help you add more impact to your slides and create attractive graphics and charts that will impress your audience.
Prezi is undoubtedly one of the most innovative PowerPoint alternatives out there. Through its easy-to-use, dynamic, single-canvas and non-linear presentation format, it has opened up the world of presentation and graphic slides to new possibilities.
The base of a presentation is a main, canvas-like slide that you can then zoom in and out of as you take your audience on a journey through your big picture idea and the finer details. CNET described Prezi as a web-based map that has completely changed the way we navigate through map books online.
PCMAG also writes that Prezi is a collaborative brainstorming tool that can be used like an online whiteboard with different people adding text and graphics.
The unique zoom feature allows for a more engaging presentation that will bring your audience into the action. It's a great tool for presenting informal information in a creative format.
So as you can see, there are numerous alternatives to PowerPoint that are worth checking out. Each one has compelling features that will help you create an original, attractive presentation that will engage your audience far more than another boring set of PowerPoint slides.

Chiasmus pronounced: kīˈazməs/
I hate that word, yet love what the power it holds.
I once had a nightmare about this word: I was in class, and every time I said “chiasmus” out loud, somebody said, “bless you.”
I kept saying; I am not sneezing I want to teach you a powerful rhetorical device used by the most of the influential speakers of all time.
“Bless you.”
In rhetoric, chiasmus (Latin term from Greek χίασμα, “Crossing” is the figure of speech in which two sentences are related to each other through the reversal of their grammatical structures.
Have you ever heard the following phrase: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
Yes, that is an example of chiasmus with two related sentences flip-flopped.
If you prefer to avoid nightmares, just call it the flip-flop formula
When the going gets tough
The tough get going
-----
Ask not what your country can do for you
Ask what you can do for your country
-----
Let us preach what we practice
and practice what we preach
-----
All of the above are examples of Chiasmus or flip-flop sentences.
check it out:
Going get's tough > Tough get going
Your country can do for you > You can do for your country
Preach what we practice > Practice what we preach
Makes sense?
Here is how you use the Flip-Flop Formula
1- Think of a message you want to get across to your audience:
Example of message #1 : Don't use slides
Example of message #2: Respect your audience
2- Figure out a flip-flop structure for each message
Example for message #1
You either use your PowerPoints, or your PowerPoints will use you
Example for message #2
If you don't respect your audience, your audience will not respect you
What do you think?
It's your turn now: come up with something and share it in the comments below. I would love to see it.
It's no secret: people have shorter attention spans.
According to a study sponsored by Microsoft: The average attention span of a person in 2000 was 12 seconds, and by 2013 it was only 8 seconds.
That's not an impressive number when you compare it to the 10-second attention span of a goldfish.
With our society experiencing information overload and messages being reduced to 140 character tweets, smart professionals are learning to adapt their message to this new era.
One of the best ways to create these short messages is to follow flip-flop formulas. A chiasmus makes your core message easy to remember, quote, tweet, and share.
You either change your message based on your audience or change your audience based on the message. (haha, could not resist)
Society is changing, attention spans are dropping, and you can't change that. All you can do is change your message. Chiasmus will help you re-formulate your message, so it fits our current times. As a result, you will be more memorable, quotable and resonant.

When people seek tips on good presentation skills in Google, they typically type in the following question:How to give a good presentation?
Sorry to tell you but that is the wrong question to ask.
The better question is: How to give an effective presentation?
Because in a business setting, effective beats good any day!
So what is the diffrence between a good presenation and an effective one …
Changing the adjectives from “good” to “effective” in the question turns it from a subjective question to an objective one. Think about it: What's “good” for you might not be “good” for me and vice-versa. However, what's effective can be measured and documented.

1.successful in producing a desired or intended result.
When you present in a business setting, you do not just flap your lips for no reason. You always have an objective, and this objective should always be measurable. Otherwise, you will never know whether the presentation was successful or not.
Also… A good presentation is not necessarily effective, but an effective presentation is always good.
A presentation to everyone is a presentation for no one. If you try to build a presentation for “all” your audience members, then your message will be diluted, and your arguments will be stretched out in multiple directions.
That is ineffective.
Imagine that you are trying to write an important email, and every 10 seconds someone from your company stops by to ask you a question. Do you think you will be able to write a good email?
The answer is, “No.”
Same thing happens if you try to create a presentation without clarity on who it is intended for.
You will be thinking about an argument to convince Sam, and then Sally pops into your mind with a different need than Sam, and then you switch your thinking to Sally, and 10 seconds later Paul shows up and so on.
By the time you are done with the presentation and have all your slides ready, you will have some thought slides in your presentation to satisfy Sam, some slides to satisfy Sally, some conclusion slides to satisfy Paul and etcetera.
There will be no unifying message or theme. This is why some presenters ramble on with no point to make. Rambling is a symptom of a presentation with no anchor point.
If you want your presentation to be effective, you have to pick one person or a maximum of two to use as anchor point(s). This will help you stay focused on a linear and cohesive message.
Okay, you are convinced. Now, how do you pick your anchor-person?
There are many choices for each presentation, but you have to be strategic with your choice. I usually pick by asking myself these three questions:
Who is the decision-maker?
Who is the most important person in the room?
Who would benefit the most out of my presentation?
Then I make my decision. If you can't think of a real person, then create a Persona. A persona is a symbolic person you chose. Usually, I pick a name and a title for this Persona. Some examples: Mark an engineer, Molly a doctor, and Mary the CEO.
I like to come up with a real person vs. persona. However, a persona is better than nothing.
Remember the first step to creating an effective presentation is to create the presentation as if it will be delivered to only one person. That person is the anchor point for all your thoughts, arguments, data, and slides.
Why do we set outcomes in business? Because outcomes are how we measure success.
Without setting goals and outcomes, we would build hobbies, not businesses. A presentation in a business setting is a tool to educate, influence and move a business agenda. Therefore it must have outcomes and goals attached to it.
Have you ever asked your manager or a trusted colleagues after a presentation on how you did? That's good. There is nothing wrong with asking.
However, if you set clear outcomes for your presentations, you will not feel the need to ask. Because now, you would know how successful a presentation was by measuring the outcomes.
Here is how you set an outcome for your presentation:
Notice how the anchorperson comes in the picture. Without them, there will be no set outcome for the presentation. If you have two people as your anchor people, then you need to do this process twice (That's why I chose only one anchor person).
Do: At the end of the presentation what do you want your anchor person to do:____________
In business, there is always a ball to be pushed forward. When you present, you have to consider what you want the anchor person to do to push the ball forward. Do you want them to sign off on a project, approve a plan, give you support, buy something, or give you resources? Or maybe continue giving you support and resources? What is it that you want them to do?
You have to be clear on what you want the anchor person to do. Otherwise, there is no tangible business outcome to the presentation, and I believe that's a waste of your time.
Think: At the end of the presentation what do you want your anchor person to think:____________
(Just as a suggestion, book mark this page so that you can come back to it every time you have a presentation, that way you make sure your presentations will always be effective)
Once you know what you want your anchor person to do, then you can move on to the thinking part. Use simple language and write down a couple of thoughts you want your anchor person to leave your presentation with.
It's important to keep this very simple. If you are writing paragraphs, then you are not doing this the right way. Keep it simple.
Use Nike as an example: What do you think Nike wants you to think when you see one of their products for sale? “Just do it!” That's why they hammer this in every single time they present using commercials.
When you see a pair of kicks you like and wonder whether to buy them or not, what do you think is playing in your mind? “Just do it.”
Following the footsteps of Nike, it's your turn. What do you want your anchor person to think at the end of your presentation?
Write it as they would say it. For example instead of writing “I want them to think that we proposed a great approach.” Write it this way: “Wow, what a great approach!”
Notice that you write it as if your anchor person is thinking it.
Feel: At the end of the presentation what do you want your anchor person to feel:____________
There is a big difference between feel and think. Feel is an emotion like love, hate, sadness, fear, happiness, inspiration, comfort, etc.
Sometimes you want people to feel one or two emotions in your presentations. Choose the feelings that will help guide your anchor person to do what you want them to do.
Once you have this, you will have a solid outcome to measure your success against.
When I do sales presentations I usually have the following for my do, think, feel parts:
I want the anchor person to purchase at least three full day public speaking boot camps; I want them to think “wow magnetic speaking is different than anything I've tried before,” and I want them to feel hopeful and optimistic about improving their public speaking skills and confidence.
See it's simple.
Einstein once said, “If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.” Before you create your whole presentation, sit down and think about your message.
Come up with a simple and concise way of saying it out loud. If you can't do it, then I assure you that your whole presentation will not be understandable to your audience. You have to be able to tell your story in a nutshell. Here are examples of a clear message or story in a nutshell:
Notice that each of the nutshell messages above can be expanded into a big presentation that has background, evidence, position and call to action. But you can't go that far if you can't even state your position in a simple and clear statement.
If you want to learn how to give good presentations, then you need to learn how to give effective presentations. Effective presentations are the key to your success in a business setting because they are outcome oriented and measurable goals. If you focus on creating good presentations only, then you will not necessarily create effective ones. However, if you focus on creating effective presentations then you will always get good and even excellent ones.
