How to Overcome Fear of Public Speaking: Three Ways

How to over come fear of public speaking

People often ask me How I (Finally) Got Over My Fear of Public Speaking.

The short answer is that I have not.

The fear is still there but I got it under control. Now, I speak at a national scale at conferences and coach the biggest names in the corporate world. I give my clients feedback and advice on how to manage their stage fright and perform well in the spotlight.

Before managing my anxiety, the fear of public speaking controlled my life. I could not even speak at meetings at work without blushing, sweating, stammering and losing my breath.

If you don't know me yet: Ten years ago I was a stereotypical chemical engineer: Introverted, shy and terrified of public speaking. Now I am a national speaker, trainer and author and run a public speaking training company. How did I conquer my public speaking fear – below are some of the things that helped me get over my fear and hopefully will help you too.

1)  The first step to overcoming the fear of public speaking is to realize that you are not alone

It's such a relief to know that others struggle with the same thing you struggle from. Initially, I thought I was alone and that no one else fears public speaking.

Luckily, I was wrong.

The first thing I tried to do when building my speaking confidence is to join a Toastmaster group. The moment I stepped into the room, I realized that there were other people who are like me. I realized that a lot of people were scared of public speaking.

Speech anxiety affects more people than you think. According to the National Institute of Mental Health: 74% of Americans suffer from some sort speech anxiety. Realizing that others suffer from speech anxiety helped me tremendously. It gave me comfort to know that others suffer from this as well, and they understand what I go through when I am on stage.

I work with professionals all the way from entry level to C-level and help them get over their nerves and perform better. So don't feel bad and most importantly don't feel sorry for yourself.

The first thing I recommend you do is to check out your local Toastmasters group. Or sign up for a free public speaking class and meet other people who are in your situation. That will help you a lot.

2) Learn to control your focus

When people get anxious, they tend to turn their whole focus on anxiety. Unfortunately, what you focus on expands; when you focus on the anxiety, you increase that anxiety.

Professionals who attend my trainings and workshops always want to find out: what causes anxiety, how to get rid of anxiety, and how to deal with anxiety? – That's normal when you have a toothache you always poke it with your tongue to check on it, right? The same thing happens with public speaking fear; you always keep checking on it don't you?

But, just like with your tooth, the sooner you get your mind away from it, the sooner the pain starts to go away.

The next time you feel the anxiety, turn your focus on other things like your audience. Training your focus muscle takes time – After our full day intensive boot camps, most attendees feel more comfortable with speaking to groups, because we spend the whole day helping them shift their focus from their anxiety to the audience right in front of them.

3) Re-interpret the response of anxiety

One of the biggest things I've done to overcome my fear of speaking is to re-interpret the anxiety symptom.

I noticed that the symptoms of anxiety and excitement were the same: Your body temperature goes up, your heart rate goes up, you sweat a little more, etc. The same symptoms, yet when you interpret the symptoms as anxiety you hold yourself back and when you interpret it as excitement it frees you up.

I taught my private clients how to do this for years and recently I found out that there was a clinical study done at Rochester University that proves this.

Then next time you feel the symptoms, ask yourself why am I excited instead of asking why am I nervous – you will be surprised  how this changes the game.

Next steps

These are only three ways of many to overcome your public speaking anxiety and fear. I will do other posts on other ways soon.

Meanwhile, take steps to build up your confidence by practicing the three ways I listed above. You can start by taking some public speaking classes at Toastmasters or our Magnetic Delivery Boot Camp coming up.

Every day I meet people at all levels in the organization from a new hire to a CEO who have speaking anxiety and it holds them back in their career, it does not have to be this way – getting rid of the anxiety and fear is easier than you think.

How To Make a Presentation Interactive: The “Contrast Question” Technique

How to make a presentation interactive using the contrast technique

I am always looking for interactive presentation ideas to share with you in this blog.

Because interactive presentations are always more fun, more educational and more influential than data dumps. When you see great communicators in your organization, you will notice that they are not just flapping their lips at you, they sometimes stop and interact with the audience.

You probably wish you can do the same, but interactivity does not come naturally to you. And that's ok, interactivity is a difficult thing if you don't have a structure for it.

In this article, you will learn an interactivity game called the Contrast/Question technique. It's one of many tools that you can start using to force interactivity in your presentation even if it does not come naturally to you. If you are one of the rare people who are naturally interactive, this will add more tools to your toolbox.

But first…How To Make a Presentation Interactive

Interactive presentations increase retention

How To Make Presentations Interactive

If you are not naturally interactive when presenting, then interactivity has to be orchestrated and planned ahead of time for you. You can't rely on chance, you can't hope and pray that for some magical reason you will be interactive on the day of your presentation.

Any presentation can be interactive. I truly believe that. I worked with engineers, Dr's, Astronauts, Mathematicians, Biologists, Programs, Lawers, and more and never have I encountered a presentation that does not lend itself to interactivity. Interactivity comes from technique and skill and not from content. Which means if you learn the techniques you can make any presentation more engaging.

There are lots of techniques to make your presentations interactive today we will go over one. The trick is not to just memorize all these techniques, but to take them one at a time and start implementing in your presentations until they become second nature to you.

The Easy Contrast/ Question Interactivity Technique

In order for this technique to work, you have to look at your topic in terms of a timeline. And on the timeline, there is a “big” event that had a huge impact on you, the topic, or the industry. Before that “big” event happened, things were in a certain way, and after that event took place, things changed dramatically.

An example of such events could be 911, the 2008 house market crash, the Golf war, the passing of Steve Jobs, etc.

Of course, the event does not have to be very dramatic (especially if you are presenting internally to your team): it can be when a drug your company is working on was denied by the FDA, or when you had to Pivot your startup, or when you had to change a direction on a project.

Once you have that event, follow the step-by-step formula below.

Step-By-Step-Formula:

1. Introduce your topic

2. Describe a state before (something) happened. DON'T reveal what happened yet.

3. Describe a state after that thing happened.

4. Ask that audience if they know what happened?

5. Get some answers from the audience

6. Answer and explain

Here is an example from Biology

1. Introduce your topic

There is a phenomena in Biological history called the Cambrian Explosion. For years, scientists hypothesized about the cause of it, but nothing made sense. Until, Andrew Parker, an Australian scientist explained it with a theory called The Light Switch Theory.

2. Describe a state before (something) happened. Don't say what the something is.

Before the Cambrian Explosion, most of life on earth was in the form of simple organisms.

3. Describe a state after that thing happened.

After the Cambrian Explosion, 500 million years ago, the rate of diversification in life accelerated to an order of magnitude. We began to see organisms, animals, reptiles, and all kinds of life on earth.

4. Ask that audience if they know what happened?

Do you know what happened 500 million years ago that caused this Cambrian Explosion?

5. Get some answers from the audience

People will guess. They may or may not guess your answer. It does not matter.

6. Answer and explain

It's Eyes. The sense of sight developed according to fossil records. That's why Andrew Parker called it the Light Switch Theory (It's just a theory, maybe it's not true). When predators developed sight, other forms of life had to develop defense mechanisms to protect themselves and survive. So different shapes, colors, and behaviors had to evolve causing an evolutionary explosion. Now we call that the Cambrian Explosion.

Ok here it is in complete form

There is a phenomena in Biological history called the Cambrian Explosion. For years, scientists hypothesized about the cause of it, but nothing made sense. Until, Andrew Parker, an Australian scientist explained it with a theory called The Light Switch Theory.

Before the Cambrian Explosion, most of life on earth was in the form of simple organisms.

Now it's your turn, create something and share it in the comments below. Would love to read your comments and questions.

Conclusion

Interactive presentations are always more fun, more educational and more influential than data dumps. To be recognized by your peers and management as an effective communicator, you need to add interactivity to your presentations.

You don't have to do a lot – just 2-3 times in each presentation will be more than enough. Hope this technique will help you with one of these times. By stringing few techniques like this one in each of your presentations is how you make your presentations interactive even if you are not natural at it.

What Can You Learn About Presentation Craft From Standup Comedy?

Stand-up Comedian

“I have a big presentation coming up…What do I say?”

“Where do I start?”

I hear this statement-question a lot.

The question part stems from a sense of overwhelm about the presentation process and is usually one question hiding many questions in the background.

If unpacked then the question might be:

What should I say? Who am I speaking to?

What do I want them to take away? How do I start? How do I finish?

Who is going to be there? Can I pull it off? Will they believe me?

How can I make it interesting?

And a million other questions firing up in the brain causing the sense of overwhelm….

The good news is that Stand Up comedians have struggled with the same issues for a long time and figured out a system. The system helps them create great content that gets the job done quickly.

I came across this system when I studied stand-up comedy. I got into stand up to improve my sense of humor as a speaker, but I got more than just that; I got a system that helps me create great presentations faster and better than anything I've seen before.

Introducing The Bit-System

If you listen to stand-up comedians, you will probably hear them say something like “That was a great bit.” What they are referring to is a stand-alone chunk of information that they created, tested, and refined. This bit fits with other bits to make up the comedian's show (presentation).

Comedians don't wake up one day and download on a piece a paper a list of jokes and wa-lah, They are ready for HBO!

It takes them time and effort to develop each bit at a time. A comedian gets an idea to make people laugh. He takes this idea and tests it on friends in a one-on-one setting. If the idea has some merit, the comedian will develop it.

Then, it will be tested in a club to observe the audience's reaction. In the case of positive response, it will be incorporated it into the act. If it doesn't seem to be funny, the comedian will work on this bit more or just throw away this idea i

Comedians are known for their humor, but their system is not a joke. It works and produces content for the toughest environments to present at. This system is as agile as you can get regarding development.

BTW – A similar system is used with Agile Software Development but instead of bits, they call the smaller chunks of development sprints – now back to the article

With minor tweaks, you can create powerful and effective presentations using the same system.

How to apply the Bit-System to presentations

You can use the system used by comedians to build your presentation following these five steps. If you need more in-depth training on this, then check out the Magnetic Blueprint Boot Camp (in the boot camp we break the process into the nuts and bolts, and you walk away with the complete system).

1- Set a goal

2- Test an idea or a seed

3- Create a bit and test it

4- Repeat step 3 until complete

5- Create presentations like Lego

1 – Set a goal

Every presentation must have a goal. For standup comedy the goal is always the same: make people laugh. For you, the goal varies per presentation. Sometimes it's to get support, sometimes it's to get approval, and sometimes it's to get funding.

If you keep the goal in mind, you will know what Bits to choose and what Bits to drop. If you neglect to set the goal and starting developing your bits, you will risk creating a fragmented presentation that does not make any sense.

Having a clear goal for each of your presentations will get you focused, therefore becoming clearer and more precise.

2 – Test an idea (Your seed)

Once you have the goal down, it's time to start creating your content. It all starts with a seed.

Think of one idea, one data set, one theme, or one story and run it by someone you know. Tell them what your goal is first, then tell them the idea and third see what they say. Get multiple opinions. This will help you develop the first bit and will give you a clue of what other bits you need in the presentation.

Once you have a valued seed, it's time to build your first bit.

3 – Create the first bit and test it

A seed is an underdeveloped bit. Take your seed and develop it further by adding data, examples, metaphors, and stories to it. Don't be afraid to combine multiple ideas or seeds into one bit – that's fine.

Keep testing your bit as it develops. Two ways to check it: one is to run it by someone you trust. Two is to say it out loud and listen to how it sounds.

Once you test it a couple of times, it's time to create the other bits you need for the presentation.

4 – Repeat until complete

Just repeat the previous steps until you have all your bits. Remember to keep going back to the goal and make sure that each bit supports somehow the goal  Of course, collectively; all your Bits will make a solid case for the goal.

Once you have all the bits, it's time to assemble them into a complete whole.

5 – Create presentations like Lego

Once you build your presentations using the Bit-System, you presentations will feel like pieces of Lego. You can break them apart, rearrange them, and put them back together how you want.

The most important part is that you can take a Bit out and swap it for another any time you see fit.

Bye-Bye Old System – Hello new world

We are taught to build presentations using a 2500-year-old system that was invented by the ancient Greeks. It's a good system, and it has its applications, but it does not work well in modern times.

Our modern presentations need to be more dynamic, more robust, and more adaptable – that's where the Bit-System shines.
