The #1 Secret of Highly Persuasive People: Future Pacing

Future Pacing and Influence

I believe that you can be more persuasive.

Especially when armed with storytelling, strong language patterns, and confidence.

I use this Magnetic Speaking Blog to address all of the above, and today, I want to focus on “persuasive language patterns.”

Specifically, “The King” of all language patterns: Future Pacing.

It's a pattern I learned while studying Neuro Linguistic Programing (NLP), a pattern used by top communicators like Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King, Tony Robbins, and much more. It's a simple technique that can have a significant impact on your ability to persuade others.

This technique helps your audience visualize a new future. Because, If your audience can't imagine your vision, then they will not buy into it.

Future pacing helps your audience visualize and live the vision for a brief period. To be a persuasive speaker, you have to communicate with your audience in a way that will help them imagine and experience what you are speaking about.

Whether it's a vision you want to rally people around, a product you want to sell,  or a new procedure you want to persuade people to adopt. It's imperative to “future pace” your audience before they leave your presentation if you want to make sure they are on board.

Here is how to future pace your audience in three steps:

1. Acknowledge where they are at right now

If you want to be persuasive, then you can't be dismissive. Tweet: If you want to be persuasive, then you can't be dismissive. #quote Peter Khoury @magneticspeak

People have a need to feel important, and the first step towards influencing them is to acknowledge their current position. Otherwise, they will resist you.

You can't dismiss what they have built so far or devalue their contribution up to this point.

Imagine that you are the CTO of a company and want to move the company to a new infrastructure. The old infrastructure was used for years and built a massive multimillion dollar brand. The new infrastructure is needed for future success. You can't talk to the developers and tell them that what they have built so far is “crap.” They will resist you and despise you. You have to acknowledge what they have built before you make your case for the new infrastructure.

If you are selling product X (this, of course, does not have to be a product: It could be a concept, idea, project, vision, etc.), your audience could be in one of these positions:

– One, they have never heard of you or your product before.

– Two, they have heard of your product, and now they are considering it.

– Three, they bought your product and now they want to take it to the next level.

– Four, they like where they are at now and don't like the new way you are proposing.

Before you future pace them to the next level, you have to acknowledge where they are at right now.

Example:

Here is a word-for-word example of recognizing your employees and colleagues before future-pacing them into a new way of doing business:

“I know that a lot of you worked hard to get us where we are now, and I appreciate all of your hard work (notice how I am acknowledging them and not putting them down). And now we have to think about the next steps towards taking our company to the next level. Achieving new heights will require us to take a different approach which will be both challenging and rewarding.”

To future pace your audience, you must acknowledge where they are at right now. The language changes based on what you are trying to persuade them to do; the structure remains the same.

2. Future Pace

Take your audience to a particular event in the future where they are utilizing or applying what you are sharing with them. If this is a product, then you want to take them to a time in the future when they are using the product and reaping the rewards and benefits from it.

To future pace, you need to use the word “Imagine,” and a distinct time frame.

Use the following formula:

Imagine, (fill in a particular time) from now …

Here are some examples of future-paces:

  1. Imagine, 10 days from now you are driving to work in a brand new Tesla. (The future event is driving the car to work and the 10 days is the time).

  2. Imagine, a week from now you are using the Future Pace Pattern in your presentation and elegantly influencing your audience to your way of thinking. ( The future event is utilizing the Future Pacing Pattern in your next presentations, and the time is a week)

  3. Imagine, that a few months from now our software users can access their software on all of their devices (the future event is the users accessing software on all devices and the time is few months).

3. Post Acknowledgment

In the same way that people like to be acknowledged for where they are at, they also like to be recognized for where they end up. I know that this might be hard to do because the future event has not happened yet. To be persuasive, you have to commit to the future outcome and communicate as if it's inevitable.

After you take your audience to the future and have them experience one event, you have to celebrate it a little for them and acknowledge them for getting there even if in thought.

Here are examples of a post-acknowledgment

  1. That would be great!

  2. That would be a huge accomplishment for our team!

  3. That would be a new level of performance.

  4. That will make our company even more successful.

Conclusion:

Those were the three steps of a future-pace pattern. At this point, you know what the pattern is, and you might be thinking of applying it (acknowledgment).

It will take some thinking at first but the more you use the pattern, the easier it becomes. Imagine, a week or a month from now you have to propose a new feature, a new concept, or a new design in your organization, and you find yourself using the future pace pattern with ease and elegance to persuade your audience (future pace). That would be a huge step towards the more persuasive you (post acknowledgment).

Hope this is helpful. Would love to see what you think in the comments below!

Interview with Scott the Nametag Guy

Scott-The-Nametag

Scott is a popular engaging speaker, author of ten books, and has a blog which was voted to be one of the best 100 business blogs in the world by Alexa and Technorat.

Scott is an expert on approachability, public speaking and sales.

Enjoy!

Public Speaking Skills

Peter: Are you ever nervous when speaking in public? How do you deal with the nervousness?

Scott: I don’t get nervous. Nervous = Unprepared. I get EXCITED. And I channel that into my performance.

What is the best state of mind for a speaker? Is it confident? Creative? Congruent? Humble? How do you get into that frame of mind before speaking?

Relaxed is the secret. I get that way by doing breathing exercises and meditating and, of course, knowing my material cold.

How important is it to be real and authentic when speaking in public? Why?

It’s not important – it’s ESSENTIAL. People can smell BS in about four seconds.

Are you a naturally good speaker? If not, how do you make yourself more interesting as a speaker?

Yes, I am a natural speaker. Won an award when I was 19 as “Speaker You Could Listen to For Hours.”

More Interesting Person = More Interesting Speaker. Boring is the enemy.

Do you have a specific way to organize the content of your speeches?

It’s not a way – it’s a system. I’m building software around it and I teach other people how to do it. I can’t explain it unless we have four days, which we’ve done.

Let me just say this: Think Modular.

Have you ever had a bad public speaking experience? Tell us about one and what you learned from it.

Slept through a speech once. That was pretty stupid. Lesson Learned: Set two alarms.

Do you memorize your speeches? Do you script them? How do you remember them?

No script. No memorization. My life is my preparation. Not to mention, everything I know is written down somewhere and, therefore, etched upon my consciousness.

How did you practice your skills as a public speaker? Where and how often? (Any acting training? Any voice lessons? Any storytelling lessons?)

No lessons, no training. Just a lot of speeches. (Peter: Check out the article: How To Learn Public Speaking Fast)

Business and Career

Peter: What was your biggest fear when you started your career as a speaker?

Scott: That my age would destroy my credibility.

Could you talk a little more about how you started your business and what helped you stick to your business idea?

My parents’ “donation” helped start it, and my parents’ believing in me helped it stick.

I know your first book was “Hello My Name is Scott”. What inspired you to write that book and how is it related to your public speaking career?

I wrote the book because I thought, “How can I NOT write a book about this?!”

It started my speaking career because, apparently, if you have a book, you are smart, and people like to hear smart people give speeches. Hooray!

Is writing a book an essential part of becoming a successful speaking career?

The myth is “you gotta have a book” as a speaker. That’s a lie. The REAL secret is “You need to be constantly writing.” Writing is the basis of all wealth. And if you don’t write it down, it never happened.

When is the right time to start branding yourself as a speaker? Do you need to know all the details before you start do you take an evolution approach?

You started branding yourself when you were about 7 years old. Go back and figure out what your brand already IS, then shout it from the rooftops.

If you can start over: What would you do differently in your career?

Nothing. No regrets. Everything that happened to me has made me who I am.

How do you become an expert on any given topic?

Read 500 books about, write 1000 articles about it and publish 8 books about it. That’s what I did.

Personality

Who are the top three people you admire, love or like?

Gitomer and Godin (Peter: These are two of my favorite as well)

If you have to complete the following sentences what would you say:

Public speaking is__________ FUN

To me personally, public speaking is __________ EUPHORIC

I speak to ____________ VALIDATE MY EXISTENCE

Are you the Name Tag Guy all the time even with your friends, or is it a speaking identity

24-7 baby.

Do you believe in personal coaching? Did you ever work with a personal coach about your business? Your goals? Your public speaking?

Coaches are great. Just make sure the coach you hire is preaching a message that is the dominant reality of his life. Everyone else is a hack. “Those who can’t do, teach,” applies to coaching. If you meet someone like that, run.

Give us your favorite quote:

“L.U.C.K. is an acronym for “Working Your Ass Off.” –Scott Ginsberg

Any question you wish I would have asked but did not?

You didn’t ask what I do when I’m not working. Answer: Playing music.

Anything else you would like to say to me and to our audience?

The hardest reality for a speaker is to realize, “Nobody cares about you.”

How To Wrap Your Head Around Your Presentation – Video

Do presentations stress you out?

Thousands of intelligent and capable professionals become stressed when they have a presentation to give.  They spend days and weeks in dread as they anticipate the day marked on their calendar when they have to give a speech. They don’t know where to start or what they will even say.

A lot of the overwhelm is not due to content- most professionals know their stuff. It’s due to lack of mental structure for building presentations.

In this post, we will expand on the video above “How to Structure a Presentation,” and you will learn how to mentally think about compelling presentations and speeches; you will learn the same method all of our trainers and professional speakers at Magnetic Speaking use to build their presentations.

If after reading this post and watching this video you want more training on this with hands-on instructions and coaching, consider the Magnetic Blueprint Boot Camp (full day intensive training).

The Trick: How To Structure Your Presentation

The trick is to break-up the presentation and speech into manageable pieces. All you need to know is how to break-up your talk into pieces and stack them together. The pieces are called Bits (Based on stand-up comedy) and they are also called buckets.

The bits you stack together determine what kind of a presentation you make. You could build an effective sales presentation, an informative technical briefing, a project update or even a mini-workshop. With this tool, building presentations becomes as easy and as fun as building Lego models.

Every speech or presentation has a combination of the following 3 bits (you don’t have to use all of them):

  1. Opening Bit: A bit that grabs your audience’s attention and never lets’s go.

  2. Body Bits: A group of bits designed to fill the body of the talk. I recommend 1-4 bits

  3. Closing Bit: A bit that closes your presentation with a memorable and powerful bang.

Bit Structure Technology Resource:

It took me years to come up with this Bit Structure Technology. It will take a lot more articles and videos to explain it all. If you want to learn it right away and can’t wait to start applying it, then consider taking the Magnetic Blueprint Boot Camp. There, you will learn the whole structure and how to use it to build presentations with ease, grace, and confidence.

After the boot camp, you will be able to build presentations using the shortcuts, tools, and bit technology used by professional trainers who speak in front of audiences for a living.

11 Ingredients Every Great Presentation Needs

A great presentation has the same requirements as a great dish!

Great ingredients.

Just like Chef Ramsey can’t put out a tasty risotto, steak, or pasta without the appropriate ingredients, you will not be able to create a stellar presentation without the proper ingredients.

Below is a list of ingredients every great presentation needs.

1- Well-Articulated Outcome

In order to make your presentation focused like a laser beam on target, you have to know exactly what you are trying to accomplish. The more physical and tangible your outcome is the better your presentation will be.

Examples of a well-articulated outcome: Approved budget, permission to go to phase 2 clinical trials, kill project x, etc.

Without this articulated outcome, your presentation will be aimless. In business we don’t communicate for the purpose of flapping our lips, we do it to achieve something. How can you achieve anything if you can’t articulate it? You don’t have to share this outcome with your audience, but you have to know it.

2- Initial Hook

Realize that your audience is distracted with their emails, projects, and problems. To make sure that they are on board, you have to hook them right from the start of your presentation. The best way to hook them is to start your presentation with a bang! Get their attention and get them enrolled in the conversation before you begin or you will lose their attention for the rest of the presentation.

3- Clear Introduction

If you did a good job with the hook, your audience would be all ears for the introduction. Leverage that hook to clearly articulate your position and outline your presentation. Here you clearly and concisely tell them what you will cover in the presentation and why it is important to them.

4- Clear and Logical Narrative

Every presentation tells a story. Get clear on the story you want to tell and make sure that it all makes sense. Check for incongruency, distractors, and unnecessary fluff. Use your well-articulated outcome (ingredient #1) to guide you by constantly asking, does this plot lead to the outcome I intend? If yes continue, if no, then you need to rework the plot to take your audience to the decided outcome.

5- Well-Divided Body

The body of your talk can’t be a solid piece of content. You have to have the content divided into self-contained buckets so that each bucket can be digested and understood on its own. For example, you might have a bucket on the status of project x, then a bucket explaining the budget for the project, and then the third bucket for plans to go forward. Notice that each bucket can stand on its own.

See the video below for more on this ingredient. This is how I build my presentations and how you can do it to if you take our Magnetic Blueprint Boot Camp.

6- Magnetic Body-Hooks

Studies show that humans have an attention span of about 6 minutes (I think it’s less). To keep people interested you need to make sure that you re-hook the audience to your content every 5-6 minutes. You can do this by asking them questions, by having them ask questions and by deploying constant engagement techniques.

 7- Data

Even though I deserted engineering ten years ago, I still love data. I like to see data in presentations because it gives me comfort. Just make sure your data supports your narrative and supports your well-articulated outcome. Even if you are not a data person, force yourself to look into the numbers and derive insights from them. Data calms down the left-brain and adds strength to your arguments and suggestions.

8- Drama

If you use data by itself, your presentation will not be balanced. In fact, it will be boring! Inside our heads are two brains; the left-brain and the right-brain. Data is for the left-brain, Drama is for the right-brain. If you only appeal to one, then you are missing half of your presentation. Drama is generated by your narrative first (how you lay out your points), and then it is introduced by using anecdotes, stories, examples, analogies, and examples of your work.

 9- Depth

Data + Drama+ Insights = Depth. Your insights are important because they give your audience a new perspective, a new way to approach things, and they also showcase your capabilities in the organization. Without insights your presentation will be superficial – adding insights will give it depth and meaning.

10 – Big Why

Have you ever been at a presentation and  found yourself wondering  “Why are we even doing this?” You most likely know why you are working on a project, and you know why it’s important to your department and your customers. However, other people might not know and might not be able to connect the dots – you have to weave the Big Why into your presentation by answering why you are presenting and why it is important (I prefer to do this in the introduction).

11- Clear Conclusion

Don’t run off the stage without properly concluding. Don’t say that you don’t do it – I’ve seen Marines at Miramar Station in San Diego run off the stage after their presentations in training without concluding – and those were brave Marines.

Make sure to stick around and clearly conclude your talk. Don’t leave anything to chance. The good news is that the conclusion is just the introduction in past tense. For example, in the introduction, you might say “Today I am going to cover x, y, and z.” In the conclusion, you might say “Today I covered x, y, and z.”

Hope this was helpful. Feel free to share it and use it as much as you like.
