Hand Gestures: What Never To Do With Your Hands When Presenting

What To do With your Hands During Public Speaking: Hand Gestures

Your hand gestures determine how you are perceived by your audience.

According to a study published in the Leadership & Organization Development Journal: If you don't use your hands when presenting, or if you use awkward hand movements, your audience will label you as cold and aloof.

On the contrary, if you use proper hand gestures, they will perceive you as engaging and charismatic.

Because hand gestures are so important to your success as a presenter, I came up with the following list called the 5 Commandments of Hand Gestures.

Note: Of course there are exceptions to all these commandments. The most notable exception is when you consciously violate these commandments to demonstrate a point.

1. Thou Shalt Not Leave Hands Idle:

Imagine watching a speaker for an hour just flapping his lips with no hand movement. That would be weird, if not plain freaky!

When you move your hands to explain what you are talking about, you will help your audience understand your points. A study by the University of Chicago showed that hand gestures facilitate understanding of audience members.

If you don't use your hands, your audience will judge you as a less charismatic leader, and they will not understand as much of your presentation.

So make sure you use your hands when you speak. Get comfortable using your hands to drive home each point you make to your audience.

2. Thou Shalt Not Put "Both" Hands in Pockets:

Body language - Hands in pockets

Notice that I said no to both hands. Because in some cases putting one hand in a pocket looks great and will invoke a sense of confidence.

A client of mine once complained that he is not closing sales because he is intimidating customers during sales presentations. After seeing him present, I agreed. I advised him to put one hand in his pocket while presenting. That had an enormous impact on him: that simple move made him look more approachable and more confident. He started getting more interaction with his customers during presentations and more sales.

The one hand in pocket approach might not work for everyone. Only use this if you have an intimidating presence. Otherwise, just keep both hands out of pockets and talk with your hands.

You may place one hand in your pocket because that can demonstrate that you are relaxed and comfortable while still having authority. However, both hands in your front or back pocket will always indicate a lack of professionalism. So avoid putting both hands in your pockets at all times.

3. Thou Shalt Not Cross Arms:

Body Language Crossed Arms while public speaking

As a speaker, open body language makes you more approachable and closed body language makes you less approachable.

Growing up, I always noticed that when my dad was upset and did not want us to talk to him, he crossed his arms and sat on the couch. No one in the family dared to speak to him. You have probably had similar experiences with parents growing up.

As a result, I am conditioned to worry when I see people with crossed arms, and most likely, so are you.

Yes, I agree that we should be more enlightened and not read too much into other's behavior. But we are all humans, and we can't help it. Now as a speaker, you need to be aware of how your body language affects others reactions and remove anything that might distract them from your message.

Try not to fold your arms even if you are thinking or waiting for a speaker. If you catch yourself with folded arms, just open them up, and soon you will pick up a habit of maintaining open body language.

4. Thou Shalt Not Wring Hands:

Hand clasping

Wringing your hands gives the impression that you are nervous, hesitant and worried about the words you are saying.

There are many forms of wringing:

1. Clasped hands wringing

Wringing your hands and clasping

That's when you hold hands together palm-to-palm and move them back and forth.

2. Cupped hands wringing

Hands Cupped Together

That's when you cup your hands inside of each other palm-to-back, and you move them nervously.

3. Intertwined finger wringing

Intertwined fingers

That's when you twist your fingers and rub your hands back and forth.

Instead of hand-wringing, you can use "hand steepling." Steepling hands are perceived as confident, calm, and smart. Just like any other technique, don't overuse it.

Steeple Hand Gesture

Steepling your fingers is just an intermediate state for you until your hands begin moving naturally again with the conversation.

5. Thou Shalt Not Fake Hand Gestures:Fake Hand Gestures and Expression

The worst thing you can do with your hands is to fake gesture. Your audience is starving nowadays for authenticity and any attempt you make to faking anything will backfire.

I always recommend that clients practice fake gesturing in private to get comfortable with new movements. However, when it's performance time, I tell them to let go and be authentic. If they practiced enough in practice, the gestures would come out naturally and authentically when they are speaking publicly.

What to do now

I know I just gave you a comprehensive list of what not to do. But then what do you do?

Here is a list of three things to do to improve your gestures when presenting.

1. Awareness: pay attention to what you are doing with your hands.

2. Replacement: Any time you notice a gesture that you don't like pull your hands to your side.

3. Be all in: Once your hands are to your side, go to your topic. If you are telling a story, re-live it. If you are talking about a computer code, then visualize the code, and if you are talking about neurons, visualize the neurons in front of you as you talk about them. At the Magnetic Delivery Boot Camp, we have a whole segment on what to do with your hands, what we covered here is just a starter.

Conclusion

Your hand gestures determine how your audience perceives you. Your gestures can turn off your audience, or they can bring them closer. There are five negative gestures that impact your credibility and influence, and you should avoid them as much as you can: Idle hands, both hands in pocket, crossing arms, hand wringing, and fake gestures.

5 Powerful Presentation Lessons from Martin Luther King Jr.

what-made-i-have-a-dream-such-a-perfect-speech-analysis

The " I have a dream " speech by Martin Luther King Jr (MLK) is one of the most influential speeches of the 20th century.

Regardless of you presentation topic, if you want to motivate, inspire, and move your audience, then you must study this masterpiece and apply it to your presentations.

The "I have a dream" speech is full of rhetorical devices that you can apply to any presentation in the business or technical world.

I Have a Dream Rhetorical Devices and Takeaways

Takeaway #1

The civil rights movements is a the context of the I have a dream speech

Always be aware of the context of the speech. If you aren’t, then the topic you share will be irrelevant.

The speech gets much of its greatness from the historical context of civil rights. A speech is nothing without context. MLK knew his background and knew the right message for that context.

In business presentations, you need to know why you are presenting what you are presenting. You need to know the bigger picture when it comes to your company's overarching goals and the roles of your co-workers in the audience. Otherwise, you will not know how to make your speech relevant.

The French philosopher Victor Hugo once said: “Nothing is stronger than an idea whose time has come.” Martin Luther King always managed to say the right thing at the right time. If you want to say the right thing at the right time, then you need to be aware of the context and background at work.

Takeaway # 2

Success of a speech depends on the goals you set

Always have a measurable outcome. If you have a measurable outcome, your presentation will be focused. If you don't then your presentation will ramble on aimlessly.

In the I have a dream speech, MLK knows what he wants to see happen.

Here is what he wants to happen:

"Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy… Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children."

Before you even begin working on your presentation, think about what action you want people to take after your presentation. Do you want them to support your initiative, do you want them to give you feedback, do you want them to invest in your company?

Whatever it is, you need to know it. Otherwise, you will not know what to include or exclude from your talk.

Seth Godin once wrote a blog article called Every Presentation Worth Doing Has Just One Purpose

In the article, he says that the purpose is "to make change happen." If there is no change, then your speech doesn't matter. I agree, you need to cause or initiate a change in people's thinking, habits, beliefs, or knowledge. In business you are not just flapping your lips, you are striving for results.

Takeaway #3

Anaphoras in martin luther king speech

Use "anaphora" in your speeches. Anaphora is a Greek term used to describe the repetition of the same word or phrase at the beginning of consecutive sentences.

Example:  Notice how I start each sentence with the word "Anaphora" below:

– Anaphora is a rhetorical device

– Anaphora is a Greek term

– Anaphora is a powerful tool for any presentation

There are multiple anaphoras in the I have a dream speech – here is one example. Notice how MLK uses the phrase "Now is the time”:

"Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.

Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation…

Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice…

Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children."

As with any other rhetorical device, you must be aware of overuse in corporate presentations. You probably never have to go for more than three repetitions.

I've had a client use it in a Sales Kickoff meeting with excellent feedback.

Today is the day we prepare

Today is the day we learn

Today is the day we get ready to shatter all our quotes from last year.

Here is another client using it at a pharmaceutical conference: Notice that she used it twice. Still powerful.

Our research is future focused

Our research is patient focused.

Here is a video by Nancy Duarte with a more in-depth tracking of repetition in King's speech if you are interested:

Takeaway #4

metaphors in i have a dream speech

Use vivid metaphors more often. Corporate presenters always complain about people glazing over when they speak. It's not completely the audience's fault; our presentations are so boring. They have statements and facts and neglect some emotional appeal.

Some metaphorical language will add the jolt your audience needs. I know you don't want your presentation to sound fluffy!

I get it – just hold on for a few sentences and I will show you how a VP of customer service used it to describe their global operation to the team using metaphors with great reception.

There are multiple metaphors in the "I have a dream speech." Here is one:

“the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.”

Ok, so how do you do it?

You can use metaphors to describe your current state as a company, department, or team.

You can say that your team experience is rocky – I am sure you have used that phrase before.

You can say that the company is going through incubation; you have a couple of eggs as a company you are sitting on and you are hoping they will hatch soon.

Or you can talk about your customer support team as fragmented and isolated geographically in silos.

Notice that in each example of the metaphor, we did not go overboard as most people fear.

Conclusion

If you want to motivate, inspire and move your audience, you must use Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech as a reference. The rhetorical devices that he uses throughout his speech such as anaphora and metaphors can be transformative when applied to an inspirational speech. Try using these devices in your next company presentation. Please let me know what you think in the comments below, thanks!

How to Make Sure Your Presentations Are “Value Add”

Blank business diagram with lots of room to write your own text

Are you someone who "adds value" when presenting?

If you are not someone who adds value, your audience might think that you are wasting their time.

To get over this fear, I came up with criteria that I use to judge my presentations to make sure they are value adding.

You probably hear the phrase “value adding” a lot these days, and I thought this would be helpful for you to gain clarity around what that means.

To make sure your presentations are “value adding” run them against the following criteria and ensure they fulfill at least one of the guidelines below. This could be an opportunity to improve your presentations or validate that they are value adding.

This could be an opportunity to improve your presentations or validate that they are value adding.

1- Your presentation has to be audience-centric

finalfinalaudience-centric

Your presentation is for the audience and NOT for your ego. The slides, the design, the level of information, and the language is there to serve the audience first. The ego may get a little bit of space in the presentation – However, the lion’s share goes to the audience.

The best way to do this is by focusing on your audience the entire time you are creating your presentation.

2- The information you present has to be practical, applicable, and simple

Find ways to make the content in your speech practical, applicable and simple. Especially, if your topic is theoretical or highly technical in nature.

To make it practical and applicable: look for ways to relate the topic back to your audience and show them how this benefits them at the individual, group, and organizational levels.

To simplify your message, constantly look for analogies, stories, and statistics that will make the content of your speech easier for your audience to understand. Making things simple takes a lot of thought and work and is worth the investment for you and your career.

3- The information you deliver advances a collective goal

Make sure that what you say has the purpose of moving things forward for your team or your clients. All too often, professionals present just for the sake of presenting.

Always be aware of your department and company’s goals and make sure every presentation advances and contributes to the advancement of at least one of those goals.

The size of the advancement does not matter as long as there is some movement forward.

4- Present something new (to at least some of the audience members)

Elegant business partners holding blank papers on green background

New could mean new information, new learning, new ideas, or a new perspective. And remember that the information does not have to be new to everyone – it just has to be new to some.

Conclusion

Any time doubt crosses your mind, and you think you might be wasting your audience’s time, run through this criterion and double check that your content is aligned with it.

Make sure it fulfills, at least, one of the criteria above and, of course, the more criteria it meets, the better.

This will make you feel more confident about your content, and will make sure that the audience will get value out of what you say.

Amazing Public Speaking Anxiety Elimination Method

Public Speaking Anxiety Formula

Imagine what your life and career would be like without any public speaking anxiety.

Yes, having an anxiety free presentations are possible.

If you practice the following formula you can terminate your body's anxiety response on the spot, the moment it happens.

This method is best used in the heat of the moment when you first start to experience speaking anxiety or fear.

The formula that explains public speaking anxiety

E + I = R (Event + Interpretation =Response)

The basic idea is that your response when doing a presentation (whether it is anxiety, fear, panic, joy, love or confidence), is dependent on an event (like people's behavior, and facial expression, eyes) and how you interpret those events.

If you interpret the events in a negative way, you will get a negative response. If you interpret the events in a positive way, you will get a positive response, and if you interpret the events in a neutral way, then you will of course get a neutral response.

What fearful people do?

Bad Interpretations lead to fear

People who respond with fear and anxiety while presenting, tend to take environmental events and interpret them in the worst possible way.

For example:

What does it mean to you if one of your listeners during a presentation falls asleep?

– You might think that you are boring.

– You might believe that the topic is not interesting.

If you are like most people, then you will tend to give the most negative interpretation possible. This is by far the biggest contributor to speaking anxiety during presentations.

How do you interpret a "blank look?" How do you explain "folded arms?" How do you understand a "frown?" How do you interpret "people having a conversation during your presentation?"

If you accept the first negative interpretation that comes to mind, you will get in trouble.

What do confident speakers do?

Confident speakers understand that they can’t control the events. However, they know that they can control their interpretation of these events.

Confident speakers always take responsibility for how they feel. They never say that another person caused them to feel a certain way. If they feel angry, sad, or fearful, they always take responsibility and admit to themselves that they created that response.

Sure, they might not be responsible for events that happen, but they are entirely responsible for how they respond to those events.

Learning to take responsibility for how you react emotionally, physically and mentally to situations and events has tremendous benefits, not only for your public speaking ability but your life and career in general.

This is usually a big topic I address with one-on-one clients and has a tremendous impact on their careers, finances, and relationships.

Three interpretations that will help you avoid the speaking anxiety response

Since you can't control external events, you have to control your own interpretation of the events to control your response.

Here are three possible interpretation strategies you can use:

1. The Balanced Strategy

Balanced Approach To Anxiety
Be balanced with your interpretations: Counter every negative interpretation with a positive one.

If someone falls asleep during your presentation –

One interpretation might be that you are boring. The positive counter might be because the person is tired.

Just counter with a positive interpretation for each negative one.

Since you don't know if the negative interpretation is correct, then it's safe to say that the positive interpretation is equally possible. So many times during my early days as a speaker, I made an assumption about someone's state of mind, and I was proven wrong.

One time I assumed that because a man was frowning as he looked at me during a presentation, that he disapproved of what I was saying.

Of course, that made me angry, fearful and anxious.

Soon he moved to another seat and said that there was too much light coming from the window next to him and could not see me well earlier.

The moment he explained himself, I felt relieved and stupid at the same time. If I had known the balanced strategy, I would have used it to avoid feeling anxious and fearful to begin with.

2. The Zen Strategy

Presentation Zen Approach

Avoid indulging in interpretations

My favorite way to deal with interpretations is to avoid going down the rabbit hole of interpretations altogether.

When my brain interprets a behavior (good or bad), I tell myself that this is just one interpretation of many possible interpretations. Most of the time, this allows me to move on without having the negative fear response.

Over the years, this particular technique helped me build a buffer zone between my audience’s behavior and my reaction. The buffer zone helps me not to overreact when an audience member does something that implies disinterest, disbelief or disrespect (the three deadly D's). The buffer zone gives me time to let it go before it affects my state.

One time I was conducting training for a company in San Francisco. There were 35 people in my audience, and the event was broadcasted to three other virtual locations (New York, Utah, and India).

Everything was going well, and people were smiling, laughing, and interacting with me.

Except one person: she was nodding off. Yes, sleeping in my training. Just like anyone else, my first interpretation was that I was boring her to death.

Luckily I know better, and as soon as I heard the negative interpretation in my mind, I chose to ignore it and let it go.

Honestly, I had no idea what was happening with that lady. She might have been tired, sick and she might have even been bored – who knows. I did not want to check-in with her at the time because everyone else was engaged. The training went fabulous, and I was asked to train again at that organization. I still don't know what was wrong with that lady, and that's ok.

3. The Scientific Strategy

The Scientist Approach

Sometimes it is useful to verify interpretations.

If someone has a blank look, instead of just assuming that you were not clear. Ask her if what you said made sense.

If she says "yes," then move on.

If she says no, then ask more questions or re-explain if appropriate.

The Scientific Strategy works, because you don't have to spend the rest of your presentation worrying. Just like a scientist, you create a hypothesis and seek to prove or disprove it.

Unfortunately, you can't overuse the Scientific Strategy, because if you have to check on every environmental trigger, then you will never finish your presentation. Not to mention that you might come across as insecure.

Conclusion:

Practice these 3 approaches until they become second nature. Your brain habitually interprets audience behavior negatively, and you have to train it to be balanced, not to indulge in interpretations, or to at least check before freaking out.

Don't overuse any of the three, balance them out. There are three more advanced strategies that I use to help me keep my public speaking fear at bay. I will be posting those in another blog soon.

Once you have this down, you will be able to neutralize your public speaking anxiety on the spot before it creeps up and takes over your body.

If you know strategies that work for you other than picturing your audience in their underwear, please share them below, that will be very helpful to so many other professionals.
